Programming with the Bio-languages (P03221)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : BIO-P-BIO Bioinformatics depends heavily on bespoke programming to achieve analyses of extensive datasets. These programs can be written in a variety of languages, and several languages have specialised 'bio' repositories of code that are directly applicable to bioinformatic problems. This course introduces students to building programs in the language perl, and deploying them in real-world bioinformatics environments. ? Keywords : Bioinformatics, programming, perl Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : For MSc Bioinformatics Students: Introduction to java programming Subject AreasHome subject areaDelivery Information? Normal year taken : Postgraduate ? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4) ? Contact Teaching Time : 3 hour(s) per week for 10 weeks All of the following classes
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
It is anticipated that students who successfully complete the course will be able to:
* discuss the utility of interpreted programming languages in bioinformatics * discuss the strategies useful for building robust and maintainable programmes * design bioinformatics programmes that solve specific bioinformatics tasks * produce bespoke programmes in perl that deliver specified solutions Assessment Information
