BioSensors (P03066)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EEL-P-P03066

This module provides instruction in both the concept and application of electrochemical biosensors that act as self-contained integrated devices capable of providing analytical information, using a biological recognition element retained in direct spatial contact with an electrochemical transduction element. Instruction is also given in the general principles of sampling and analysis, statistical presentation and manipulation of data. This module serves as an introduction to some of the biosensors and electronic measurement techniques covered in the module BioSensors & Instrumentation.

? Keywords : antigen/antibody, chemiluminescent and fluorescent labels, electrochemistry, enzymes, equilibrium reaction, physicochemical signal transduction, transducers.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The students will gain an appreciation of various types of biosensor in which the recognition system utilizes a biochemical mechanism that translates information from the biochemical domain, usually an analyte concentration, into a chemical or physical output signal with a designed sensitivity. They will gain practice in the general principles of sampling and analysis, statistical presentation and manipulation of data generated by biosensors.
