Comparative Perspectives in Nationalism Studies (P02935)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : SPS-P-P02935 The focus in this course is on how nationalism is studied. The first part involves lectures and discussions on methodological approaches to studying nationalism, such as case studies, comparative frameworks, and typologies. Thereafter substantive areas are explored through guest lectures by staff whose work engages with questions of nationalism (e.g. in Scotland, east central Europe, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Israel/Palestine, and Sri Lanka). Students will further explore the issues involved in conceptualising cases through group presentations on substantive topics of their choice. The course seeks to enable students to:
- Demonstrate knowledge about an array of ways of categorising different forms of nationalism, and to critically compare and assess their utility. - Make informed judgements about the applicability of particular theories to particular substantive cases of nationalism. - Appreciate the diversity of forms of nationalism, and of ways of studying it. - Write a dissertation demonstrating an ability to compare theories and relate them to substantive case material.
