This course provides a framework on which later courses can build. The module will comprise 5 topics:
- Cardiovascular physiology
- Respiratory physiology
- Fluid homeostasis and the kidney
- Inflammation
- Immunology

Within these subject areas, specific examples will be chosen to illustrate key areas of relevance to equine husbandry, performance and medicine.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Understand the principles of cardiovascular physiology;
Understand the principles of respiratory physiology;
Be aware of the key issues in fluid homeostasis as applied to equine medicine;
Be able to explain the causes and mechanisms of inflammation;
Grasp the overall concept of immunology;
Be able to critique current research in these areas.
