Research in practice (P02838)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : MED-P-P02838 The aim of this course is to acquire the skills to plan and execute an independent research project. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Pre-requisites : None other than programme entry requirements ? Co-requisites : This is a compulsory course for all candidates at Stage 3 of the Cert/Dip/MSc in Health Informatics and Cert/Dip/MSc in Health Information Governance programmes. ? Special Arrangements for Entry : The course will be delivered using RCSEd’s VLE with appropriate links to the University’s systems. Students will be expected to use a range of flexible learning methods including participation in discussion forums, online seminars and wikis and accessing resources in a range of formats e.g. pdf files, video clips, and audio files. In addition to the course materials and resources provided, candidates will be expected to use internet and published resources during self directed study and research. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
a. Explain the approach to and development of a research question, selection of appropriate research methods and plan for undertaking a research project
b. Define the most appropriate tools for a given research situation and perform a detailed appraisal, including assessment of the merits of quantitative or qualitative methods to answer the research question c. Explore in depth the tools for research, focusing specifically on the project chosen for the project phase of the MSc d. Develop a proposal for a research topic suitable for completion as their dissertation project. Assessment Information
Summative assessed research proposal (3000 words) which will be used as the basis for the research project.
