A comprehensive survey of theories of truth, including the correspondence and coherence theories, and pragmatism. The semantic conception of truth (Tarski), and more recent debates about deflationism. Other topics discussed may include relativism, debates about truth and meaning, and the semantic paradoxes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who have completed this course should be able to:
* Demonstrate a good overall grasp of the main contemporary theories of truth
* Assess the various arguments in favour of, and against, these theories of truth
* Understand the relation between debates about truth and other topics (such as relativism, truth & meaning and the paradoxes)
