Academic Practice and Methods (P02737)

This course forms the second in a series of three courses designed to develop a student's study and historical research skills. This course involves several elements designed to familiarise students with the nature of academic history. With reference to a particular debate or historical issue, students learn how evidence and argumentation have been developed in ways that aid analysis and historical interpretation. The relationship between evidence and interpretation will form a key component of this course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

a) Knowledge and understanding:
- familiarisation with a particular area of scholarship

(b) Intellectual skills:
- understanding the historiography of the topic studied
- assembling arguments and ideas to present as an argument
(c) Practical skills
- practise bringing ideas and evidence together in a logical argument
- demonstrate knowledge of academic conventions regarding references, primary and secondary materials, and associated presentational skills
