Experimental Economics (P02701)

The course aims at providing students with an introduction to experimental economics, with an eye toward preparing students to design and run their own experiments. Topics will lie in two primary spheres: experimental methodology and the state of the art in the major strands of experimental economics.
• Experimental methodology: The goal of this section is to enable students to design and run sound laboratory and field experiments successfully. This section comprises not only procedures commonly recognised as good practice amongst experimental economists, but also issues for which there is—as yet—no clear consensus. Areas covered include design of experiments, ethical concerns involving human subjects, motivation of subjects, and statistical techniques.
• Strands of previous experimental research: The goals of this section are to give students an overview of literature relevant to experimental economics and to enable them to identify promising areas for future experiments. This section comprises experiments designed to test economic theories, experiments designed to discover new stylised facts, and experimental work applied to specific policy questions, as well as non-experimental work seeking to unify experimental results.
