Theory and practice of second language teaching (P02600)

This course is suitable for those who:

• have a thorough understanding of the English language at degree level
• have no teaching experience
• want a theory-based preparation for the language teaching profession

The course will cover:

• theory of TESOL and language learning
• case study: analysis of practice
• applying theory to practice with teaching experience
• action research

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

• evaluate the theoretical principles on of TESOL methodology
• analyse observed classes from a theoretical point of view
• apply language teaching theory to their own teaching
• apply action research theory to teaching experience


Assessment Information

Assignments

• a 2500-word essay on language teaching/learning theory, demonstrating an ability to analyse and evaluate the theoretical principles on of TESOL methodology
• the 1500-word reflective journal from case-studies, demonstrating an ability to analyse and evaluate classes from a theoretical point of view

Presentation

• a 10-minute presentation on the teaching experience, demonstrating an ability to apply language teaching theory to their own teaching, and carry out action research which will inform the 2500 asssignment.
