Carbon Economics (P02556)

This course first introduces the concepts of carbon markets and the efficiencies (or lack of) therein. It then covers the models currently used to assess carbon performance and issues of scale in terms of time and geographical coverage. It explores the existing and proposed policy instruments for carbon management via fiscal measures and makes a critical assessment of cost-benefits analyses of these mechanisms. Finally it makes an in-depth exploration of the emission trading scheme, its mechanisms, development and barriers.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Students on other School of GeoSciences and School of Business and Economics MSc programmes may enrol by prior agreement between relevant Programme Directors and the Course Organiser. Anyone wishing to enrol students from outside of these Schools should make a specific arrangement with the Course Organiser.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

• High-level understanding of markets and efficiency
• Familiarity with integrated assessment models, different temporal and spatial scales
• Ability to evaluate policy instruments (taxes vs tradable quotas)
• Critical assessment of costs and benefits of climate change mitigation
• In-depth knowledge of emissions trading mechanisms

Assessment Information

• Group presentation (worth 30%)of specific and relevant topic using Problem Based Learning methodology. Assessed by minimum of 2 course lecturers. Worth 30%
• Written exam (worth 70%) in December. Essay-based: 2 from a choice of 5, each of approx. 1,500 words.
