Integrated Resource Management (P02391)

The course includes both soft and hard centred techniques together with background policy approaches appropriate for the management and control of natural resource use, particularly at a macro level. It draws on applied examples of resource use and misuse and provides students with the opportunity to inspect and resolve problem cases. It includes tool such as socio-economic flowcharts, stakeholder analysis, activity matrices, co-ordinating activities, strategic environmental assessment, resource auditing, monitoring and control. It also examines alternative instruments governing resource use within the context of current government policies.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be expected to be able to:

1) appreciate the types of management approaches necessary for effective resource use
2) carry out stakeholder analysis, resource needs analysis and resource audits
3) understand the procedure for strategic environmental assessment
4) assess the value of market and non-market costs and benefits of natural resources
5) interpret the effects of economic instruments on natural resource use
6) appreciate policies relating to natural resource use
7) use policy evaluation tools
8) develop computer skills appropriate to natural resource management
9) enhance their investigative, analytical and communication skills through problem solving cases
