Research Methods in Healthcare and Nursing (P02329)

Increasing importance is being attached to evidence-based practice and policy in healthcare systems around the world. This reflects a growing awareness of the necessity for health care and health services to make best use of science and technology in delivering high quality and cost-effective services and in systematically evaluating their outcomes, whether in terms of individual benefit, service attainment, consumer satisfaction or public health improvement. All healthcare professional are now expected to have a sophisticated understanding of how research methods and research findings can be exploited in the delivery, development and evaluation of services for the benefit of patients and clients. This course assumes that students already possess at least some basic theoretical knowledge of the process and methods of research.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Demonstrate critical understanding of the role of research in healthcare and nursing
- Demonstrate skills of literature reviewing and critical appraisal for research design and for problem solving in the practise setting
- Demonstrate critical understanding of research design in healthcare and nursing
- Demonstrate critical understanding and application of research methods in healthcare and nursing
- Deal with complex issues (epistemological, methodological, practical and ethical) which are attached to research methods and their applications in healthcare settings

Assessment Information

The course is assessed on the basis of two assignments. The first is a short report (two sides of A4) which counts for 30%, and the second is a longer essay which counts for 70%.
