Treatment Planning and Review of Technique (P02125)

This module aims to help students:
To understand the common dental diseases and how they influence the delivery of patient-centred, broad-based restorative dental care.
To review some traditional operative skills in the light of current knowledge of the efficacy of restorative procedures.

Modular Course of Study

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : First degree or equivalent professional qualification. Recent appropriate professional experience in dental primary care. At least 3 years post-graduateion experience. Registration with the General Dental Council in the United Kingdom.

? Co-requisites : Current clinical practice in dental primary care.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Specific support will be arranged for students with specific disabilities as already arranged for the other Master Degrees at Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute.

? Costs : As per fee strategy £1800 per module.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Participants should be able:
To diagnose and manage the common oral diseases which affect the teeth and their supporting structures.
To establish and use the principles of treatment planning respecting patient wishes and with an awareness of the financial implications of selecting one course over another.
To be able to mount study casts accurately in an articulator.
To know the principles of preventive and operative management of dental caries.
To begin the development of the principles of self-evaluation in restorative procedures.

Assessment Information

To provide records of:
A case history of a patient from presentation until the completion of initial stabilisation and a written summary of the history, diagnosis and management (300 words) (30%)
Five amalgam restorations and a brief critique of each procedure should be provided.(Maximum 100 words each) (30%)
Project:
Students should identify which composite material they currently use for restoring anterior teeth and which material they use for posterior teeth. They should give a brief description of the general properties of each material and a justification of why they have chosen these materials. Reference should be made to current supporting clinical research evidence. (40%)
