Prosody (P02035)

Speakers use prosody to organise segments into words and larger units, and to signal prominence relationships within these units. This course is an introduction to structural, phonetic, and functional aspects of prosody. Topics will include
-theories of prosodic constituent and prominence structure
-its phonetic realisation
-how it relates to grammar and information structure
-typological variation in prosodic systems
-intonation and rhythm.
Classes will include lectures, discussions, and practical lab sessions.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will learn:
- how prosody is defined;
- current theories of prosodic structure, and ways to evaluate them;
- how prosodic structure relates to grammar and information structure;
- acoustic and articulatory correlates of prosodic structure;
- how to interpret, evaluate, and summarise experimental findings in the literature;
- relevant techniques involved in identifying and measuring correlates of prosodic structure.

Assessment Information

Completion of weekly reading reports (10%); project or essay (90%)).
