Curriculum and Assessment (P01475)

Deaf pupils and students face a range of barriers to fully accessing curriculum and assessment. This module explores the nature of these barriers and how they might be overcome. The module will include discussion of systemic issues, as well as practical strategies for facilitating access.

? Additional Class Information : Twenty four hours contact teaching, delivered flexibly. 175 hours self study at home / in an educational setting with deaf learners.

10 am - 4 pm

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

 lectures, seminars, workshops involving presentations from visiting d/Deaf
and hearing presenters;
 Short in-class presentations on key texts and/or specific subjects;
Tutor and self-directed study 126 hours
 Critical reading of relevant literature and viewing of videotapes/CDs
relating to curriculum/assessment issues;
 Interactions with d/Deaf people to learn about their experience of accessing
curriculum and assessment;
 Discussions with fellow professionals on ways of facilitating curriculum and
assessment access;
 Exploration of World Wide Web resources in relation to curriculum and
assessment;
 Collation of material for the Professional Portfolio.

Assessment Information

Course members will produce two written/signed assignments, each of 2,000 words/20 minutes of BSL. These will revolve around issues of access to both curriculum and assessment. The course member will be given a choice of assignment topics or may negotiate their own.
