Philosophy of Religion (P01286)

These seminars will cover a range of issues in contemporary philosophy of religion. Topics that we will cover include:
- The problem of evil
- the nature of religious language
- Wittgenstein and religion
- religious realism
- Plantinga
- basic beliefs

We will look at issues connected with the idea of God, including the concepts of eternity, omnipotence and omniscience; also at the question of reason and faith, and the relation of religion to morality.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The coursework involves close and critical analysis of central issues in the philosophy of religion. Students are asked to read, critically assess and discuss some of the most important texts in these fields. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in individual research through the writing of essays, and to develop their critical, analytic and communication skills through informal discussion and oral presentations in tutorial groups.

Assessment Information

One 2500 word essay.
