Methods of Research (P01160)

This module aims to provide students with an overview of the scholarly conventions on qualitative research methods in social sciences in general, and management studies in particular. It also aims to provide students with the practical skills in applying such knowledge in their preparation for their MSc thesis. The completion of the module will allow students to develop a research proposal that includes an appropriate research question that is located within a suitable methodological and theoretical framework.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to possess knowledge on the general philosophical debate in social science and management studies and use such knowledge to construct an original piece of research of their own, and develop further independent research skills in project planning, problem analysis and solving, communication, critical thinking, negotiation and conflict management. This includes the ability to identify and evaluate critically current research and key literature in relation to their chosen dissertation topic, to choose appropriate research design and data collection methods, and to collect appropriate and meaningful evidence in order to investigate fully their chosen research question.

Assessment Information

The module is assessed: 50% coursework to assess the qualitative material and 50% examination to assess the quantitative material.
