Teaching of Literature in a Second Language (P00418)

The course consists of three main components:
- Contexts: Under this heading, two main types of teaching are considered: 'language through literature' and 'literature through language'. Their differing demands and emphases are examined with reference to participants' own teaching situations.

- Theory: This gives an opportunity for participants to develop their own background knowledge of current literary theories and terminology and to discuss their relevance to second- or foreign-language teaching.

- Classroom techniques: Participants will experience (as learners), try out (as teachers) and evaluate various techniques for teaching poetry, short stories, novels and drama. This option is not closely related to the core courses, but has some points of contact with them in areas such as discourse analysis, pragmatics, syllabus design and communicative methodology, and especially in lesson planning.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Participants will be helped to develop theoretical understanding and practical ideas to inform and enrich their teaching of literature.

Assessment Information

5000-word project. The normal format for the project is a plan of work for about ten hours of teaching, including:
- description of context
- rationale
- overall scheme of work with approximate timings
- detailed lesson plans for selected lessons
- student worksheets for selected lessons.
