Contemporary Chinese Literature (MChS) (P00206)

The course examines the re-emergence of literature as art following the ending of extreme leftist cultural policies in China circa 1978, the development of its major trends, chiefly in fiction and poetry, and its commercialisation and globalisation since around 1990.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : PGs only. MChS students: completion of MChS year one. Others: approval of their programme director.

? Co-requisites : MChS students: Chinese Language II; one other option.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:
- demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of the major developments in Chinese literature since the CR, the major texts and the major authors;
- analyse representative texts of the period in their literary, historical and social context; and
- demonstrate an ability to tackle some of the texts and secondary literature in the original Chinese (MChS students)
