Acronym : LLC-4-FR0024 This course is based on French texts in a range of styles, genres and registers and on a wide range of exercises and activities, which include polished translation, unseen translation, speed translation, the comparative analysis of published translations, translation commentary, negotiated group translation and various vocabulary-building exercises. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able:
-to translate competently from French in a variety of styles and registers and in a range of genres -to demonstrate a good knowledge of French vocabulary and idiom -to make effective use of a wide range of language-learning resources and reference materials -to demonstrate an awareness of the importance of register, idiom, rhythm, nuance and ambiguity in translation -to make efficient use of a wide range of language-learning resources and reference works -to demonstrate awareness of the syntactical and idiomatic differences between French and English -to demonstrate a good understanding of linguistically complex French texts -to demonstrate competence in the analysis and evaluation of the translation problems raised by a given text. One 1½-hour examination in December (30%); one 3-hour examination in April/May (70%).
