English Literature 2 (EL0003)

‘The Scope of Literature: the study of a range of literature written between 1700 and 1950, with an emphasis on 1) literary kinds, movements and contexts, and 2) a variety of claims regarding literature’s capacities and limits.’

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in English Literature 1 or Scottish Literature 1

? Prohibited combinations : Cannot be taken with Scottish Literature 2 except by students enrolled for MA Hons in English and Scottish Literature.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the historical development of literature within national cultural contexts; a grasp of the development of theoretical approaches to literature and criticism; an understanding of the ways in which literature can be explored through associated disciplines such as history, philosophy, and the literatures of other languages

Assessment Information

4 essays (2000 words at 10% each) 40%, plus tutorial assessment 10% = Class work 50%; two degree exams 50%.
