Science, Technology and the Environment (ED1114)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : EDU-4-STE

This course option builds on work covered in the content of earlier environmental studies courses and uses Science, Technology and Environment as contexts for learners in exploring values, ethics, responsibilities and individual development of self-awareness. Students are invited to broaden and deepen their understanding of the science and technologies outcomes from Curriculum for Excellence and engage in tutorials both in and outside the classroom (e.g. with visits to centres of informal education such as the Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens and usually a day trip such as the “Biodiversity at the Chalk Face” event in Battleby, Perthshire). Students’ ideas about the nature of Environmental Studies are extended and their knowledge is developed and applied in practical contexts to support conceptual development. The course addresses pedagogical matters in learning and teaching, the integration of subjects within the primary curriculum through the contexts of science and technologies and encourages students to engage with fundamental questions concerning the aims and values of science and technologies education and their relationship to citizenship and environment.
