* Normally these courses will include one or two of the 20 credit courses listed in Year 2 of Modern European Languages and Linguistics or English Language (MA) and/or Linguistics 2Lh: Structure and History of the Western European Languages.
† Entry to Honours normally requires a pass at the first attempt in 2nd year Language Science courses, with an average mark across these courses of 50% or above, and a pass at 50% or above at the first attempt in the relevant Modern European Language 2nd year course.
# Students may EITHER spend the second semester abroad, in which case they must take courses in Language Sciences in the first semester, OR spend the entire year abroad, in which case they are required to take courses at a foreign university equivalent to 60 credits at level 10.
‡  A booklet giving details about the courses being offered in any one year, as well as about restrictions on choice of courses, will be available to students entering the course to facilitate advance planning.
