Europe and International Migration (U03703)

This course explores how different European states and the EU have responded to the challenges of large-scale migration. It examines the causes and dynamics of migration and refugee flows to Europe since WWII, and compares state responses with respect to entry and migration control, asylum, and integration policies. The course analyses recent policy developments, including the emergence of a common EU policy on immigration, and the implications of 9/11 for migration control and multiculturalism.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Provide knowledge of causes and dynamics of migration to Europe, and enable students to apply different theories for explaining these.
- Enable students to critically analyse current debates and policies on migration control and integration.
- Enhance students' capacity to use comparative methods to explain national divergence in policy, as well as policy change over time
