Basic Research Methods in Divinity (P00604)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : DIV-P-P00604 This course is designed to introduce taught Masters students in the School of Divinity to the research resources available in the School (including library and computing facilities), and will also address critical thinking, initial advice on postgraduate research, and good practice in essay writing at postgradute level. Entry Requirements? Co-requisites : Preparing a Dissertation Proposal ? Special Arrangements for Entry : The initial plenary sessions (weeks 1-3) address general matters (e.g., facilities, conceptual issues of postgraduate research, critical thinking). Sessions in weeks 4-6 are scheduled and led by the Programme Managers of the various taught masters degrees in Divinity, and students meet with the cohort in their respective programmes for more field-specific matters. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
1. Effectively use the library facilities at New College library; 2. Prepare work using the computer facilties at the School of Divinity; and, if in difficulty, know how to call on Computer Support; 3. Use correctly the appropriate style conventions for references/footnotes for their field; 4. Engage critically in research in their subject. 5. Write relevant book reviews on topics relevant to their area of study. Assessment Information
A critical review-essay (or equivalent)on a book relevant to the field of the student's taught masters programme, totalling not more than 2000 words.
