Group Project (U01430)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : PHY-4-GroupProj

Each team of four or five students will be required to research a physics-based topic, specified by a member of staff, who will act as supervisor. The groups will present their findings in oral and written forms. The project will be literature-based; students will collate and analyse existing information from a wide variety of sources.

For Astrophysics students, the project involves the planning, undertaking, and analysis of an observing programme with the Institute for Astronomy's 0.5m telescope.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : At least 100 credit points accrued in courses of SCQF Level 9 or 10 drawn from Schedule Q.

? Prohibited combinations : Team Review (BSc) (PHY-4-TeamProj)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this project you should be able to:
1)research material on a given topic outwith the scope of your standard course work using library and on-line facilities and other resource materials
2)work as a team to gather and combine material from a wide range of sources
3)Exercise critical assessment of the project topic and arriving at a well-defended conclusion
4)hold formal team meetings and maintain minutes of such meetings
5)prepare your researched materialas a report written at a level readily understood by your peers
6)present this same material in the form of a short oral presentation, as if at a conference, and respond to questions relating to this material

Project management, 15%
Written report, 55%
Oral presentation, 30%
