Experimental Physics (U01362)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 9  ? Acronym : PHY-3-Lab20

This course comprises four experimental projects for each student, chosen (from a wide-ranging total set) to include a balanced sample of experimental techniques. Each project extends over two weeks, attending three afternoons per week.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Physics 2B: Waves, Quantum Physics and Materials (PHY-2-B); Foundations of Mathematical Physics (PHY-2-FoMP) or Principles of Mathematical Physics (PHY-2-PoMP).

? Prohibited combinations : Experimental Physics (CP10) (PHY-3-Lab10); Experimental Musical Acoustics A (PHY-3-MusAcLab).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is intended that you will be able to:
1) design experiment methodologies to achieve optimal results within the constraints of the time and apparatus available;
2) assess quantitatively the quality of their data and any derived values;
3) develop a critical judgement of the results, analysis and conclusions of an experiment;
4) communicate technical matters with enhanced accuracy, clarity and concision.

Four written reports, 66.7%
Oral presentation, 16.7%
Laboratory notebook, 16.7%
