Transferable Skills for Environmental Geoscientists (U03950)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : GEO-4-EGTRANS

The course comprises these elements:

1. Enterprise initiative. All students will participate in the Enterprise Initiative currently taken by Geology 4, Geology/Physical Geography 4 and Geophysics 4. This consists of training in a variety of transferable skills, including job application and interview methods, and oral and written presentation. The course takes place in the first week of Semester 1 and again is Semester 2 (dates to be finalised). Certain elements will be specific to Environmental Geoscience.

2. Seminars. During the course of your final year EG4 students will conduct a number of seminars that will be assessed. These oral presentations will be a component of Global Environmental Change (GEC) and Environmental Problems and Issues (EPI). EG4 students are given a series of papers to read and a week to prepare their presentation. More detailed guidelines will be given at the start of each course.

3. Oral Assessment. All students will have 2 oral assessments during the year. A first practice, non-assessed, examination will take place in January followed by an assessed examination in May. The students have 10 minutes preparation time followed by a 5 minutes oral presentation in front of several members of EG staff. The aim of this exercise is to assess the student's ability to build a constructive response to a short question and conduct an oral examination in a more formal situation than those already experienced in Global Environmental Change (GEC) and Environmental Problems and Issues (EPI).
