Clinical Immunology and Haematology 3 (U03798)

Lecture: The lecture programme will run for 11 weeks and will be base around the discipline of Clinical Immunology but introductory session to cover haematology and basic immunology.

Within the Clinical Immunology component the following aspects will be covered: Inflammatory diseases, Autoimmunity and Hypersensitivity, Transplantation, Immunodeficiency, Immunisation and Immune-based therapies and diagnosis (to complement material covered in Clinical Biochemistry and Endocrinology 3). Material covering forensics, oncology and cytology will be included to relate the main content in a wider and applied context.

Practical: There will be some wet laboratory practicals but a number of simulated practicals with analysis of results will be modified from existing course material. These sessions will be developed so that the format can be changed to accommodate different class sizes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The aims of this course are to demonstrate, through lectures and other learning environments, how the immune system develops, prevents infectious diseases and interacts with other bodily systems to limit or cause tissue damage.

This course will aim to develop communication skills through presentations of relevant papers drawn from scientific literature. Clinical case studies will be included to help with the interpretation of laboratory results and allow a link between science and the clinical situation.

Assessment Information

In course assessments:
1) Presentation of a research paper to small group of peers and a member of staff. [15%]
2) Practical test comprising of questions relating to material covered in practicals and tutorials. [15%]

Degree examination
Two hour examination in December with an essay format. [70%]
