Virus Pathogenesis (U03793)

This elective course will examine the host immune response to virus infection, virus evasion of this response and the pathogenic consequences. Topics covered will include
• Overview of the innate immune response to virus infection.
• The role of the adaptive immune system in control of virus infections
• Virus strategies to avoid/suppress the immune response
• Acute virus infections (e.g. virus encephalitis, respiratory infections including influenza, gastrointestinal virus infections)
• Chronic virus infections (e.g. CMV, VZV, HSV, HCV, HIV)
• Host genetics and susceptibility to virus infection
• Control of virus infection (e.g. vaccines)
