This elective course will study the cellular response to virus infection and how the virus overcomes and modifies these responses to facilitation replication and/or persistence. Topics covered will include:

• Cellular mechanisms for detecting virus infection
• Apoptosis initiation and inhibition in virus infected cells
• Interferon response
• Persistence of viruses within the cells
• Latency
• Modification of host cell function
• Anti-viral agents
• Overview of cell transformation by viruses
