Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year in Asia Level 10 (U03758)? Credit Points : 60 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : CHE-4-YinAsia10 This course, together with Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year in Asia Level 11 (alongside which it must always be taken), constitutes 6 months full-time study at Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) followed by a 6 month full time industrial placement in Asia. The two courses are optional Year 4 curricula for students on the degree programmes Chemistry with Industrial Experience, Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry and Industrial Experience, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry with Industrial Experience and Chemical Physics with Industrial Experience. During the period at NTU students undertake an extended research project on a topic agreed with their host supervisor. Taught courses may also be attended and may be chosen from those available at the university at an appropriate level and relevance to students' interests and degree programme. The second 6 months of the year is spent working in a chemical or related company or institute in Asia during which time the student undertakes a full time research project. Coursework for completion during the year is provided by the University of Edinburgh. Assessment consists of marks for written project reports, coursework, a written literature survey, an oral presentation and aspects of the performance on the project. Entry Requirements? Completion of Year 3 of a Chemistry or Chemical Physics degree programme. ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Successful completion of the year in Asia course requires students to:
- execute a significant project of research, investigation or development - demonstrate competence in a range of routine and advanced skills (technical, IT, etc.) appropriate to the projects undertaken - demonstrate a critical understanding of the background, theories and concepts relating to the project work undertaken - work effectively in a professional relationship alongside qualified practitioners and, in so doing, also to exercise significant autonomy and initiative in the professional environment - successfully communicate formally (presentations, reports, etc) and informally with peers, senior colleagues and specialists - offer professional-level insights, and creativity in responses to problems and issues - relate academic chemistry covered in earlier parts of the degree program to its relevance to industry - consolidate on academic chemistry covered in earlier parts of the degree -develop an understanding of Asian culture over an extended period of living within the host country/countries.
