Modern Optics (U03755)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : PHY-5-ModOpt

This course covers Fourier optics where light propagation
is considered as a scalar phenomena with linear interactions with materials. This allow the treatment of image formation to be treated by Fourier methods, which is then applied to a series of image formation tasks including astronomical applications, microscopy, scanning microscopy and adaptive optics.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : At least 40 credit points accrued in courses of SCQF Level 9 or 10 drawn from Schedule Q, including Condensed Matter and Optics (U03754).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course students, through critical study of the subject, should be able to display knowledge, show understanding of and tackle problems in the following areas:

1) Scalar diffraction theory.
2) Diffraction and imaging of a simple Lens
3) Imaging of extended Objects
4) Measurement of imaging properties
5) Abbe's theory of the microscope
6) Darkfield, phase contrast and interferometric microscopy imaging techniques.
7) Confocal imaging system, FLIM imaging.
8) Optical astronomical considerations and simplifed imaging models through the the atmosphere.
9) Adaptive imaging scheme for wavefront correction.
