Conservation Management (U03428)

This module will bring together a consideration of the principles underlying the establishment of scientifically sound ecological management in conservation programmes and the economic, legislative and practical measures for implementing them. Through case studies we will see how the practical and social context of conservation interacts with scientific theory for the mitigation of perceived conflicts between man and wildlife.

There will be a field trip to the Cairngorms over one weekend to which the students will be expected to contribute the cost of one night's accommodation (approximately 15-20 pounds).

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Population & Community Ecology 3, and Applied Ecology & Environmental Management are required.

? Costs : Circa £20 for overnight accommodation on Cairngorm visit.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an appreciation of the need for a scientific underpinning of conservation management programmes; they will understand the importance of the social and economic context and be familiar with the practical constraints; they will be able to critically assess the relative merits and demerits of practical conservation measures.
