Waves in the Environment and Telecommunications (U03423)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : MAT-4-Wav

Course for final year students in Honours programmes in Mathematics.

Waves are one of the most widespread and familiar features of the natural world, ranging from waves on water to light to optical fibres. This course will give a unified description and mathematical framework for modelling various types of wave motion. The two major types of waves will be studied, hyperbolic and dispersive waves. Physical examples will be emphasised, with examples taken from traffic flow theory, supersonic flow, water waves, laser physics and optical telecommunications.
