Housing and Society (U03246)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : GEO-3-HOUSOC

Developments in mass housing have an immediate effect on the lives of a substantial proportion of the population, and on the urban form of our towns and cities. This course will examine those developments: the forces behind them, and their physical and social results.

It will begin with a historical look at the emergence and growth of public housing, at experiments in other forms of social housing provision and at the increase in home ownership.

The second half of the course will take a more sociological approach to examine how places can become communities, including sessions looking at tenant-led campaigns and protests, at class divisions and racial segregation, and at approaches to anti-social behaviour. It will end with a look at the impact of the seismic changes resulting from recent and current policies, focusing on the 'right to buy' and on privatisation, and the resulting residualisation of council housing.
