Latin Epic (VS1) (U02896)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-VS1-EPIC This text based course will focus on Latin epic poetry of the classical period. Certain works will be prescribed reading. Entry Requirements? This course is only available to part year visiting students. ? This course is a variant of the following course : CL0139 ? Pre-requisites : Advanced-level ability in Latin language and literature, equivalent to two years' study at the University of Edinburgh (if uncertain, consult the course organiser). ? Special Arrangements for Entry : This course is only for visiting students in Edinburgh during the 1st Semester but NOT the 2nd Semester. In order for a student to be enrolled, contact must be made with a Course Secretary on 50 3580 in order for approval to be obtained. ? Costs : Copy of the prescribed text/s. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should: be acquainted with the principles of classical Latin epic and with the primarily literary and ideological nature of that poetry; have read in Latin an extensive prescription of classical epic poetry, with due attention to linguistic and stylistic detail, and literary technique; be able to discuss critically interpretative issues which arise from the texts and from a range of scholarship; have written both an essay of c.2,000 words and a short stylistic analysis of a portion of text; have contributed to a student-led presentation on a seminar topic.
Assessment Information
Take-home examination 70%; Coursework 30%.
