Research Practice in Forest Ecology (U02633)

Examining the ecology of trees and other types of organisms (fungi, insects, herbivores, mycorrhizae) in forest ecosystems of the Italian Alps, together with a presentation of the major processes involved in determining their dynamics of forest structure, composition and functions. The course is based on a field trip during the previous summer vacation period to the Dolomites, during which the students are presented with the main socio-economic, environmental and ecological characteristics of that environment and carry out a small research project on a topic of their choice

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The learning objectives consist of: (a) providing students with an opportunity to increase their research skills; (b) increasing their ability to write effectively and concisely on a research topic; (c) increasing their field knowledge in the general area of forest ecology; (d) expanding their experiences to a different setting from the one experienced during the other field courses

Assessment Information

Assessment of a practical component consisting in the writing of an essay in the format of a scientific paper
