The course provides sub-honours students with a survey of the Archaeology of Greece. After a brief survey of geography and chronology, the course takes up the cultures of Bronze Age Greece, c. 2700-1125 B.C.) to the Hellenistic period (c. 323-31 B.C.). Lectures interspersed in this roughly chronological sequence consider aspects of Greek life and society, including burial practices, Greek interactions with other cultures and the changes that resulted, religion and its tangible remains, pottery, theatre, major sanctuaries, gender roles, as well as archaeological techniques and methods.

? Additional Class Information : Lectures will take place on Mon, Tues and Thur, every other week. The intervening weeks will have lectures on Mon and Tues, plus a tutorial (at a time to be arranged). The tutorial weeks will begin in Week 2.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will have gained basic knowledge of Greek archaeology by examining a range of sites and artefacts over time, an understanding of the evidence used by classical archaeologists to reconstruct the history and culture of ancient Greece, and background knowledge necessary for more advanced study.

Students will develop basic skills to critically analyze material and written sources for the ancient world, and craft and express an argument in written form in both an essay and a class exam.
