History of Art 2 (U02125)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : ACE-2-U02125 History of Art 2 is designed as a two-semester course that builds on the knowledge and skills of students who already possess a basic familiarity with the discipline. It aims to develop more sophisticated skills of art-historical interpretation and to prepare students for the intellectual demands of 3rd- and 4th-year Honours teaching. Each semester unit is also designed so that it can be taken as an independent course. Semester 1 (HA2A: 'The Global Middle Ages') investigates the historical, political and cultural contexts of art produced in western and non-western medieval cultures. In addition, a separate strand of lectures (one lecture each week) serves as an introduction to a range of theoretical approaches and methodologies for the study of the history of art. Semester 2 (HA2B: 'The Classical Tradition') addresses the idea of a 'classical tradition' based on ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture and its impact on the visual arts of subsequent periods. During each semester the student takes a seminar course (one seminar a week) devoted to an art historical topic that serves to develop his or her visual and analytical skills in the study of the history of art through specific examples. The assessed course-work consists of one essay for each semester. Each semester unit is examined at the end of the semester in which it is taken. Entrants will normally be expected to have a pass in History of Art 1 or the equivalent. Entry Requirementsnone Variants? This course has variants for part year visiting students, as follows

History of Art 2 consists of two semester units but each semester unit is also designed so that it can be taken as an independent course. The objective of the course is to enhance the knowledge and skills of students who already possess a basic familiarity with the discipline. It also aims to broaden their knowledge of the history of art through the study in HA2A of art of medieval cultures in Europe and beyond, which is in general less familiar than that studied in History of Art 1. HA2B explores a fundamental issue in the study of the history of art in: concepts of a 'classical tradition'. The issues explored there and in the lectures in HA2A on theoretical approaches and methodologies in the history of art are intended to help the students to develop more sophisticated skills of art-historical interpretation. Overall, the four semesters of History of Art 1 and History of Art 2 have both a consistency in the structure of the teaching and a sense of intellectual development. Together they prepare students for the demands of more specialized 3rd-and 4th-year Honours teaching in the History of Art.
