Infection and Immunity (U02051)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : VET-2-II This course deals with the scientific principles and basic mechanisms of the molecular, cellular and tissue changes in disease. General features of the biology of infectious agents are introduced followed by more detailed coverage of the mechanisms of pathogenesis, immunity and control of specific diseases of domesticated animals. The course covers bacterial, viral, mycotic and parasitic diseases and includes laboratory methods for diagnosis of diseases. Practical instruction is given in appropriate laboratory techniques. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. Subject AreasHome subject areaBVMS, (Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Schedule S) Delivery Information? Normal year taken : 2nd year ? Delivery Period : To be arranged/Unknown ? Contact Teaching Time : 5 hour(s) 30 minutes per week for 24 weeks Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. Define and use specialist terminology applied to infectious diseases and their control.
2. Describe and comprehend the important features and mechanisms of the various pathological processes and understand how these produce disease and clinical signs. 3. Comprehend the environmental, pathogen and host factors involved in the transmission, establishment, persistence, consequences and control of infection. 4. Describe the pathogenic processes at cellular and molecular levels of specific viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases of animals, including zoonoses. 5. Correlate causal organisms and mechanisms with resultant pathological alterations, lesions and clinical disease. 6. Recognise, describe and interpret to a competent level viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic specimens. Material may include fresh or fixed specimens, cultures, laboratory test material, histological preparations, slide transparencies, photographs, etc. 7. Understand the principles and describe the application of appropriate diagnostic and preventative techniques to infectious diseases, their uses and limitations. Assessment Information
