Body Systems I (U02048)

An integrated course in which systems of the body are considered from the structural and functional aspects. The course begins with locomotion and small animal topographical anatomy (which runs in parallel with the rest of the course). This is followed by the systems concerned with homeostasis: neurohumoral control, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, water and electrolytes, and environmental adaptation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. outline the development and main anatomical features of the Nervous System and the environment of the Central Nervous System;
2. understand the principles of control of Body Systems by nerves and hormones as well as by intrinsic mechanisms;
3. understand the contributions of the following Body Systems to homeostasis and movement, including a knowledge of the structure of the relevant organs: Locomotor, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Renal, Endocrine;
4. understand the adaptations to different environments, including thermoregulation and responses to stress;
5. relate the structure, positions and relationships of organs to their functions in homeostasis and movement.

Assessment Information

In-course assessment (20% of the final mark) comprising 4 pratical reports (5%), written report and oral test (5%), course essay (5%) and class examination (5%). The Degree Examination contributes 80% to the final mark and comprises a written paper of short questions (30%), a written paper of essay questions (30%) and a written 'spot' paper relating to displayed specimens, histological data and practical work (20%).
