Clinical Embryology (U02013)

Aim: To provide basic descriptive account of development of human conceptus between fertilization and birth, covering pre- and postimplantation period. Topics will include: gametogenesis, pre-implantation development, placenta formation, establishment of 3 germ layers, development of heart and vascular system, body cavities, diaphragm, alimentary, urogenital and neural systems, face and skull.

Abnormalities of all systems will be discussed during the course, including lectures on spontaneous abortion, multiple births.

Topics will be presented in lectures, supported by illustrated handbook. Practical sessions: One practical will be based on analysis of sectioned/dissected mouse embryos, mouse histology + skeletal tissues. A practical/tutorial will study the human placenta, and normal and abnormal human fetuses.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : Permission of the Curriculum Approval Officer.

? Co-requisites : Developmental Biology 3 and Reproductive Biology 3 are recommended.
