Surgery; Accident and Emergency Medicine; Intensive Care Medicine; Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine (U01939)? Credit Points : 30 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : MED-5-surgery Clinical teaching in General Surgery will be based at the bedside, in the clinic and in the operating theatre and students will become actively involved in the daily activities of their base units and become an important part of the clinical team. Most of the week in the Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine attachment will be spent in the operating theatre with one-to- one teaching. The Intensive Care attachment will give students insight into the case or the critically ill patient. Much of the time will be spent in intensive care and high dependency care wards. Teaching will take place at the bedside and through a series of tutorials and computer based learning scenarios. The Accident and Emergency attachment give ample opportunity to acquire first hand experience in the management of a wide spectrum of acutely ill and injured patients. Entry Requirements? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course incorporating general surgery, anaesthesia and intensive care, pain medicine and emergency medicine is designed to prepare the student for common clinical scenarios that are likely to be encountered in the pre-registration year and in general clinical practice.
Assessment Information
In-course assessment in General Surgery, Accident and Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine and Critical Care Medicine will together contribute 10 marks to the overall 40 marks for Yr 5 in-course assessment. Each element of the course will involve a continuous assessment component. There will also be an end-of-course exam which will integrate all aspects of the course including vertical themes and will test the core factual knowledge outlined in this study guide with questions based on clinical situations that students would be expected to have experienced during their attachments. This may involve data interpretation, clinical photographs, scans, X-rays, charts, etc.
