Medicine (U01937)? Credit Points : 30 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : MED-5-med The course comprises two four week attachments, in general medicine and acute medicine. In general medicine students will be attached on a one-to one basis to consultant teams and will be expected to 'shadow' the house officers of that team. In acute medicine attachments students will participate in acute assessment of medical emergencies receiving frequent consultant teaching and a course in medical emergencies and resuscitation. Preparation for practice as a house physician - learning to combine professional attitudes, integrated knowledge and sound clinical skills to make what will be the first (and in some circumstances, only) detailed assessment of a patient presenting to a hospital acute medicine service. This will be achieved by:
a.Learning to discriminate between different causes of a presenting problem b.Developing knowledge of management of common disorders c.Consolidating key clinical skills Assessment Information
Assessment will include:
(1)a portfolio case selected whilst undertaking the general medicine attachment (2)a structured evaluation of clinical skills undertaken by consultant teachers in the general medicine attachment (3)a 'before and after' self-assessment of discriminatory skills undertaken by the student during the acute medicine attachment.
