Archived VersionThe Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study has been formulated as a dynamic online publication in order to provide the most up to date information possible. Master versions of the Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study incorporating all changes to date are archived twice a year on 1 September and within the first three University working days prior to the start of Semester 2 in January. Innovation and Enterprise for Scientists and Engineers 1 (U01858)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : EEL-1-MNIAE Using a variety of media, students study topics such as Ideas and Innovation, Intellectual Property, Marketing, Finance and Investment. The course is designed so that students can study the course at their own pace with a minimum of scheduled classes. Delivery methods will include seminars, web based training modules, self assessment tests, live and online tutorials as well as participation in discussion boards and other events such as workshops. Assessment during the course will involve satisfactory completion (40%+) of coursework assignment. The overall final mark will consist of 50% coursework and 50% final exam. On completion of the course students should be able to:
1. Understand the role of entrepreneurship within the global business environment context. 2. Identify the opportunities and key skills required in the process of creating a new business venture. 3. Understand the need for personal development. 4. Appreciate the problems involved in selecting business opportunities. 5. Understand the different types of business model. 6. Identify the key elements involved and specify a suitable feasibility study for a simple product technology. 7. Investigate different sources of information relevant to a new business venture, in particular existing intellectual property. 8. Appreciate the steps involved in basic project management. 9. Understand the role of marketing research and market(ing) strategies. 10. Develop a business plan. 11. Prepare a simple Trading and Profit and Loss Account for a small firm 12. Prepare a simple Company Balance Sheet and analyse those of other companies 13. Understand and differentiate between cost, price and value. 14. Understand the resource needs for new business ventures and appreciate these from the point of view of different agents, e.g. entrepreneurs, investors and the government. Assessment Information
