Land Use and Water Resources (U01821)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : GEO-4-WRM The successful management of the quantity and quality of water resources requires an understanding of both hydrological processes and the techniques for making relevant information available for decision-making. This course begins by examining the fundamental relationships between land use and water resources. It then moves on to explore how simulation modelling may allow relevant data to be used within integrated catchment management. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Soil, Water and Atmospheric Processes, Environmental Pollution recommended ? Prohibited combinations : Catchment Water Resources (U00371) ? Costs : None Subject AreasHome subject areaDelivery Information? Normal year taken : 4th year ? Delivery Period : Semester 1 (Blocks 1-2) ? Contact Teaching Time : 4 hour(s) per week for 11 weeks First Class Information
All of the following classes
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
•To review the basic hydrological and geomorphological processes relevant for river catchment management.
•To understand the contribution of empirical catchment experiments to knowledge about the interactions between catchment land use and water resources, in terms of water quantity and quality. •To understand and be able to construct simple simulation models to analyse and generalise the interactions between catchment land use and water resources. •To explore the intersections from the fields of (a) watershed management, (b) environmental modelling and (c) geographic information systems (GIS) and to promote a critical evaluation of the benefits and limits of combining these approaches to assist resource management in river catchments. Assessment Information
Group presentation on SUDS structure (30%) and report (2000-word equivalent) on hydrological model building (70%).
