Advanced Fire Safety Engineering Project 4 (U01622)

This course is project based. The project is based on the taught Fire Science and Fire Dynamics and Current Methods in Fire Safety Engineering courses. The brief will include a case study where the student will be provided with a building, its use and content and asked to develop a Fire Safety Strategy based on current prescriptive practices. The students will then be required to attempt an assessment of the performance of this strategy by means of calculations based on fire science and fire dynamics. The course focuses on the application of codes, standards, regulations and current practices but it is intended to emphasize the importance of performance assessment by means of scientifically based engineering tools. Thus the developed Fire Safety Strategy must not only be compliant with current codes and standards but also must be shown in a quantitative manner to achieve the goals that these regulations are intended to enforce. The student must display an understanding of the codes and standards, be able to use them to provide a solution and also be able to use engineering tools to demonstrate the validity of this solution. The students are required to study individually and use literature and internet based resources to accomplish the specified task. The student must demonstrate an insight into the full range of issues and problems covered.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course is intended to be undertaken largely by personal study. It requires the students to research the subject area sufficiently to enable them to critically evaluate a prescriptive solution by means of fire dynamics theory and calculations. An important outcome is to acquire the capability of establishing the limitations of prescriptive solutions and the complexity embedded in the assessment of performance.
