Practical Calculus (U01454)

Core first year course for Honours Degrees in Mathematics and/or Statistics. Syllabus summary: Limits and the definition of the derivative. Rules of differentiation. Taylor-Maclaurin polynomials; maxima and minima of functions. The Binomial Theorem. Definite integrals; the method of exhaustion; indefinite integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Methods of integration. Applications of integration: volumes and surface areas of figures of revolution. Graphing functions; other coordinate systems. Decay equation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Differentiating all combinations of the elementary functions using the rules of differentiation and x^n (n=-2, 1, 2, 3) and sin x from the definition.
2. Integrating a large range of functions.
3. Computing Taylor-Maclaurin series approximations to functions.
4. Describing properties of graphs of functions.
5. Describing the turning points of functions of one variable using calculus methods.
6. Using Maple to solve simple problems in Calculus.
7. Using Maple to plot functions of one variable, and interpret the output.

Assessment Information

Coursework (which may include a Project): 15%; Degree Examination: 85%.
