Chemistry 2 (U00968)

The course covers the following topics: aromatic chemistry; quantum theory; models of chemical bonding; an introduction to atomic, rotational, vibrational, and NMR spectroscopies; the chemistry of the main-group elements; thermodynamics; organic synthesis; organic stereochemistry; transition-metal chemistry; organometallic chemistry; and ionic solutions. This is the standard Year 2 course for students for the Ordinary Degree and for intending Honours students in Chemistry, Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry, or Chemical Physics.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Chemistry 1A (CHE-1-A) and Chemistry 1B (CHE-1-B); or Introduction to the Chemistry of Biology 1 (CHE-1-ICB) or Biological Chemistry (Foundations) 1 (CHE-1-BCF), and Biological Chemistry 1 (CHE-1-BCH); or with the permission of Head of School.

? Prohibited combinations : Chemistry for Life Sciences 2 (CHE-2-CLS), Physical Chemistry 2 (CHE-2-PhysChem), Chemistry and Processes 2 (EEL-2-CHCHP)

? Additional Class Information : Laboratories six hours per week at times to be arranged during M 0900-1200, M 1400-1700, Tu 0900-1200, Tu 1400-1700, W 0900-1200, Th 0900-1200, Th 1400-1700. Examples class (two hours) or Tutorial (one hour) within F 1000-1550.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
(i) Describe and explain the fundamental principles of quantum theory, chemical bonding, atomic, rotational, infrared, and NMR spectroscopies, chemical thermodynamics, ionic solution chemistry, organic stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms.
(ii) Describe and explain the trends and patterns of structures, physical properties and reactivities of selected main group compounds, transition metal compounds, aromatic compounds, and carbonyl compounds.
(iii) Use their knowledge to explain observations and solve problems associated with the material covered in the course.
(iv) Use laboratory equipment in a safe manner in order to prepare chemical compounds, observe chemical change, and measure physical quantities, and to interpret and analyse the results.
(v) Write clear, succinct laboratory reports that take due account of errors and uncertainties.

Assessment Information

6.5% multiple-choice tests (2 computer-based tests of 1 hour) + 9.75% class examination (1 paper of 3 hours) + 48.75% degree examination (2 papers of 3 hours) + 35% practical mark.
